The new long-distance trail münchen venezia closes the gap in Alpine crossings in the eastern Alps. And connects Germany’s southern-most metropolis with Italy’s lagoon pearl at the Adriatic. Between them lie spectacular landscapes and tracks for all bicycled connoisseurs. The new, 560 kilometres long connection for the most ecological and important means of transportation in the world – measured by usage – is trending: After all, bicycling combines travelling with sports, on a lifestyle product that is growing in popularity and social status.
Three countries, three climes, and Alpine-Mediterranean living environments
The route is travelled on existing bicycle roads, such as parts of the beautiful Innradweg. Added are further bicycle routes and small by-roads, not just through metropolises like Munich, Innsbruck and Venice. Stunning tourist regions and romantic towns, including Bad Tölz, Schwaz, Brixen and Treviso, can be experienced with all senses.
To the outstanding scenic attractions belong – apart from the geographic high point of the route, the UNESCO World Heritage Dolomites in the region of South Tyrol – the Bavarian lakes Tegernsee and Sylvensteinspeicher, the Tyrolean Achensee and the river Isar. Impressive experiences are also offered by the tributary valleys of the Tyoreal Wipptal, the Dolomites-encircled Cadore valley, the Lago di Santa Croce and finally the Adriatic sea. Luring are also a plethora of castles, palaces and roadside destinations, together with the Doge’s palaces and canals of the picturesque lagoon and UNESCO World Heritage city of Venice.
Disclaimer – ATTENTION
We would like to point out to all cyclists on the münchen-venezia that the münchen-venezia is a cycle route and not a fully developed 560 km cycle path. The term cycle route has evolved historically in the regions and is generally used in this way. We would therefore like to expressly point out that mixed traffic (together with motor vehicles on side roads) can sometimes be encountered on the münchen-venezia.
Please ride with foresight and pay attention to the traffic.
Over the whole route, with its total of 3000 metres altitude difference, optimal bus and train connections are ensured. Bicycle services are provided by cycling enthusiast hosts at many occasions.
A consistent signage is being developed by the project, sponsored by the European Regional Development Fund. To this, an outline map, a bicycling map at 1:75000 scale, and a route planner including GPS downloads for individual tour planning will be offered.

In the footsteps of Olympia on the münchen venezia
The munich venezia long-distance cycle route is the most spectacular crossing of the Alps by bike and is the only cycle route in the world to pass through three Olympic venues.
Munich was celebrating 50 years of the Summer Olympics in 2022, but it is not the only stage location with Olympic history. The munich venezia can also be travelled in reverse. With the shortened start in Cortina d’Ampezzo, you start and finish “Olympic”.
Cortina, host for the first time in 1956 and again in 2026 together with Milan, offers several competition venues in front of the panorama of the Tofana group of the Dolomites. The Stadio della Neve, the Cortina Sliding Centre and the “Trampolino Olimpico Italia” ski jump.
Then the route continues in the direction of South Tyrol. Shortly before Bruneck, at the height of Olang, you come to Antholz via a small detour. The route continues towards Innsbruck, host of the 1976 Olympics, with the Axamer Lizum, the Patscherkofel and Igls before Innsbruck. In the city area, the venues Bergisel ski jump, the Olympic ice stadium and the Olympic or exhibition hall can be visited.
Once in Munich, you can visit some of the sports venues from the 1972 Summer Games. The Olympic Stadium, the Olympic Hall in the Olympic Park, the old Munich exhibition grounds, sites in the English Garden and Oberschleißheim, the equestrian stadium in Trudering-Riem, the Rudi Sedlmayer Hall, the Hochbrück shooting range and the Dantebad. A memorable stop is the Olympic Village, where there is a memorial to the 1972 assassination.
